The first recorded mention of this charming, old world hotel goes back to 1307. Previous records were destroyed by fire. In those days it was known as the "White Lion" and served as an overnight resting place for travellers arriving too late to pass into old Prague through the town gate, now known as the Powder Tower.
In the 17th century, the son of the Empress Maria Theresa, later Emperor Josef II, stayed here and in his honour the name was changed to "City of Vienna".
Towards the end of the 19th century it became quite a notorious establishment.
